Born in Bogota, Colombia, Nelson Gutierrez is an artist exploring the psychological and social implications of conflict. He received his BA from the Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano and later earned an MFA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Most of his work is composed of two and three-dimensional pieces, conceptual objects, and installations that reflect current sociopolitical issues. He uses materials such as charcoal, ink, wood, metal, blood, wax, water, glass, light and photographs - juxtaposed in a way that provides symbolic relevance to the topic being explored. Guttierez’s work has been exhibited around the US, and internationally in Colombia, the UK, and Switzerland.. He lives and works in Memphis, where he serves as an Exhibition Committee Member for the Brooks Museum of Art.
