Project Overview
Sparks | Hickory Hill Police Station
Sparks, Mark Nowell’s large-scale carbon steel sculpture in front of the Police Department, references the official crest of the Memphis Police Department, which lists the commitments of knowledge, courage, and integrity below the images of an eagle and the scale of justice. The emblem has been brought to life in jagged intensity. Its abstracted, tallest forms reference the eagle, while three stars and a triangular scale allude to the qualities promoted by the Police Department.
According to Nowell, the work is intended to be “clear, strong, serious, and still approachable, to mirror the important role the department plays in our community. The Police Crest is planned as a three-dimensional, outdoor steel sculpture with size proportional to the architecture and landscape environment.”
